After highschool I went to Carbondale, Illinois to Southern Illinois University and Hugh joined me there the next year. We shared a trailer for a while and later had adjoining apartments and had a lot of fun with other friends from Morrisonville and girls and parties. I majored in Architecture and Hugh took the standard first year studies. John also went to S.I.U. a couple of years before and became president of the Theta Xi Fraternity and was active in the R.O.T.C. program. He tried to get me into the fraternity but I ended up joining the Epsilon Tau Sigma professional fraternity. Hugh never did get that far because of the Vietnam war. He and I went to the Navy recruiters office together and signed up. However, on the day we were to show up for the physical I overslept and ended up not going because of the head injury. Hugh went on to be a medic in the Navy. He spent his initial time in California training in various hospitals and then spent time in Vietnam on the front lines. He had many stories about the crazy people in the mental wards in California and the insanity in Vietnam. At the hospital in California he became a specialist in burn victums and was the most sought after by the patients for his expertise in removing skin. A story from Vietnam that stuck in my mind was him sitting on a hill and turning around to talk to his buddy and suddenly the guy had a hole between his eyes from a sniper so far away that the sound of the rifle could not be heard. He also told me stories about sitting in the jungle observing the wildlife. He was later sent to Hawaii to recover from a back injury. He had stories from there too and about sailing among the various islands. From there he was honorably discharged.
